Hillcrest partners with Cleveland Elementary in many ways throughout the school year. Besides mentors and reading buddies, Hillcrest organizes drives for school supplies, clothing, and books several times throughout the year. We also provide dinner for the staff during conferences and occasionally send thank you cards to each member of Cleveland's staff. Hillcrest has provided learning materials, including curriculum for first graders and a computer lab to Cleveland Elementary.

Reading Buddies
Hillcrest's goal is to provide 60 Reading Buddies to children at Cleveland Elementary each year.
A reading buddy is someone who listens to a child read, reads with a child, or reads to a child. The purpose is to increase a child's comprehension skills and lead to greater academic success. Reading buddies spend as little as 15 minutes a week in a classroom assisting young readers. Reading buddies may volunteer for more then 15 minutes and may assist multiple readers.
We've received positive feedback from Cleveland's teachers:
To become a Reading Buddy, start by filling out the application. You may drop it off the next time you are at Hillcrest or email it to Brian. Once you have filled out your application, Brian will contact you with available times and then pair you with a class!

School Based Mentor Program
Hillcrest's goal is to provide 60 mentors to children at Cleveland Elementary School each year.
A mentor is someone who spends one lunch hour with an elementary student and eats with them each week, plays games with them, and listens. Mentors meet with their student for 45 minutes one day a week over the student's lunch time (anywhere from 11-1).
To become a mentor, fill out this application and return to Brian the next time you are at Hillcrest; or you can email it to him.
Once you have completed your application, you will need to attend a training sponsored by Lutheran Social Services.
