However, that could not be true as Jesus’ own practice included both private and public prayer. It appears that Jesus is more aptly drawing attention to the motives behind the action. The point was not to choose between private and public prayer, but between heartfelt and hypocritical prayer. When asked to pray in public, focus on addressing God, not on how you’re coming across to others.
Questions for further thought: 1. How easy or difficult is it for you to pray? 2. Why do you think that is? Challenge: Jesus asks us to find a quiet and secluded place to experience God’s presence. Find that time in your day and be bold to pray with power.
